Sustainable Transformation Strategies - Models of Change in Society

Multiple crisis scenarios shake the possibly last consensus which holds together modern societies. Different reasons for the scepticism to growth are dicussed. It becomes clear: A sustainable development deserving this name is not a project of additional achievements, but an art of reduction. A post growth economy is oriented to the interplay between two developments supplementing each other: a moderate adaptation of claims (sufficiency) to the possibilities provided by own abilities or near, not multipliable options and resources (self-supply). How can we reduce growth based industry strutures and in unison regain economic sovereignty?

Managing Sustainable Economies

Our current so called "developed market economies" are still far away from being sustainable. But: How can we reduce our ecological footprint radically enough in order not to fail the 2 celsius degree aim?

Can enormous energy projects such as DESERTEC be a solution? Or are they nothing more than mirages? Are there new indicator systems in sight for wealth in a sustainable society? How can we train young people to act differently from what they see today?

Max Schön, entrepreneur and president of the German CLUB OF ROME, will rise and discuss these questions.

Transforming Societies towards Sustainability: A WBGU Perspective (WBGU: Wissenschaftlicher Beirat der Bundesregierung Globale Umweltveränderungen / German Advisory Council on Global Change)

The paper explains the reasons for the urgent need for a ‚post fossil-nuclear metabolism‘ and elaborates on different ways of achieving them from a WBGU perspective. It concludes that the transition to sustainability is achievable, and presents ten concrete packages of measures to accelerate the necessary restructuring. If the transformation really is to succeed, we have to enter into a social contract for innovation, in the form of a new kind of discourse between governments and citizens, both within and beyond the boundaries of the nation state. The modern era‘s global crisis can only be overcome through a profound, shared awareness of low-carbon value creation and sustainable development. It is based on the latest WBGU Flagship Report titled “World in Transtion – A Social Contract for Sustainability”.

Sustainable banking services?! 

GLS Bank Germany is the first social-ecological universal bank in the world. The starting points of its work are human basic needs and the conviction that money is there for people. That means for example that customer´s savings money is invested exclusively in companies and projects with outstanding social, ecological and economic performance criteria. 

Today banks like GLS Bank are still operating on a niche market. Even though the area of “Banking on Values” is raising awareness around the world, one can get the impression that not much has changed since the outbreak of the financial crisis. Can this business modell be a solution towards a more stable future? How and under which circumstances can innovative projects with great social impact be financed? And is there a market for Microcredit in Germany?

The Expert Day with the puplic panel discussion takes place at the University of Wuppertal in buliding K.

Professional registration for the expert day

(all registered participants are still registered for the expert day. The expert day is included in the fee and part of the Summer School, therefore participants don't need an extra registration)

The registration is for professionals to participate the hole day of August 29 within the lectures and workshops.

The maximum number of external participants is limited to ten (10) people.
